Waterproof Breeches Review

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Jo Foster from Jo Foster Racing has reviewed our new Waterproof Breeches in an article that was published in the Yorkshire Post on Saturday 28th Dec.

I was lucky enough to receive a pair of made to measure waterproof hunting breeches in white moleskin earlier in the season, made by Alexander James of Pendlebury, the company had been designing a waterproof lining and approached me in Spring to try a pair out they were working on.

I have always struggled to find a decent pair of warm, waterproof and washable white breeches. Most shrink or become impossible to keep clean without bleaching. After our discussions Alexander James took on the task of fulfilling my request to try and make the ideal pair.

The company was set up in 1979 by clothes designer Alan Little, his wife
Margaret and brother George, a cloth cutter. Both their sons now work at the
family firm. What began as a tailoring outfitters expanded in to the equestrian side ‘purely through chance’ explained Mark, Alan’s son. ‘We were approached by the world famous carriage driver George Bowman to make his livery coats and it spiraled from there.’

Now the company sell hunt coats worldwide including to most of the American
packs. They are also tailors to the Beaufort hunt, who have a specifically dyed cloth. All the wool the firm uses comes from Huddersfield.

Alexander James have a unique waterproof jacket design due to a heat sealed
‘storm tech’ lining, the material they have included in my new hunting

Whipping in takes a heavy toll on clothes, en-grained mud from lifting gates,
buttons soon ripped off in a hurry to get back aboard, seeping red stains from a drenched scarlet coat after the wild wet days of mid winter. Some days the cold and numbness gets in to my bones and chills my soul to its very core.

After wearing my new breeches out hunting recently I have given them a fitting trial in all weathers and have probably found the nearest I can to a perfect pair of breeches – they are thick, loose fitting, high backed (the cold creeps in everywhere), stretchy (to get back on) and waterproof. I am finally warm, dry and overjoyed. I have not managed to shrink them yet which is something of an achievement and can recommend them to anyone who feels the cold and wet as I do, no longer need it ruin your day. Anyone interested please contact Mark on for further details.
